Additional WCH: In Schools Program Information

WCH: In Schools integrates history education (and the Common Core State Standards) with civic engagement.  The program is part of a statewide initiative of Cal Humanities to raise awareness about veterans returning home from war.

Program teachers are expected to complete four parts of the program to receive a $200 stipend. Optional University of California units can be purchased separately.  The time commitment will not exceed 20 hours:

(1)    An online instructional toolkit will be developed to support classroom instruction.  The toolkit will include model lessons that incorporate both primary and secondary sources, Common Core instructional strategies, online presentations by scholars, and guidance for conducting project-based learning assignments.  Program teachers will adapt one lesson for classroom instruction.  Model lessons are available now!  Click here for a curriculum guide to Karl Marlantes' book, What It Is Like to Go to War.  Or click here for a lesson on the Selective Service System.  Save the date!  Our first online content lecture is scheduled for September 22, 2014.  This session will be recorded.

2)    War Comes Home events:  In support of their multi-year initiative, Cal Humanities’ partners (California Center for the Book, local libraries, UC Humanities Research Institute) are holding hundreds of  events statewide.  These community events are meant to bring together “veterans and their families, writers, and historians to explore how California is welcoming its veterans home.”  Program teachers are given priority registration for  War Comes Home event(s) in their community.  Click here for a full calendar and here for a list of participating libraries.

(3)    Online Seminars—Participants will attend three online sessions (4 – 5:30pm) to hear from leading scholars and receive classroom-tested and Standards-aligned curriculum.

  1. December 1, 2014
  2. January 21, 2015
  3. February 12, 2015

(4)    A Teacher Symposium will be held June 20, 2015 at the San Diego County Office of Education or UC Irvine from 9 to 3pm for teachers to share their War Comes Home teaching experience and student work.  A Northern California teacher symposium may be added on June 27, 2015 if there is enough teacher interest.  For program teachers, if you haven't done so, vote your preference here.
